How to paint a Sunset Seascape Canvas.
I chose a 24 x 30 inch canvas as it was big enough to do the scene justice, but small enough for it to fit comfortably on a living room wall. You may wish to use a smaller one with similar proportions, or perhaps even larger!
My palette was limited to Ultramarine, Burnt Umber, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Brilliant Purple and Titanium White..all acrylic, Daler Rowney.
Start with a diluted wash to block in the base colours using a large, flat brush. 
The base colours should glide on easily and blend well. Blending is easy at this stage because the paint is diluted and wet. Blending means letting each separate colour mix into the previous one.
I chose not to use pure black (I hardly ever paint with it, I find it too harsh), but opted instead to mix it using the Ultramarine and Burnt Umber. Experiment with it and see the different shades of dark you can get with these two colours.
At this stage the painting is very loose but all of the canvas should be covered, including the edges.
Switch to a smaller round-headed brush and begin adding layers of transparent paint over the base colours, using your fingers and the brush to blend. At this stage the paint should be quite dry and you can use it minimally.
Take a break…Rescue cheese wrapper from ‘assistant’!
Ensure that your brushes get smaller as you add more detail and as the paint you apply is thicker. I tend to use one colour at a time so if I am using a blue in the sky I would start working that colour into the sea too. If you want a straight horizon use masking tape to create a barrier between the sky and sea.
The final stage involves painting a lot of detail with a very fine brush and plenty of thick paint. Incorporate this into the edges too.
The final painting!! Sign it and seal with a couple of layers of satin varnish to enhance and preserve the paint. No framing necessary. Hang it on your wall or await an eager customer!
